Classic wildlife safari
7-Day Serengeti Safari
The classic northern circuit: Tarangire's elephants, three nights in the Serengeti and a full day in Ngorongoro Crater.
National Park · Northern Tanzania
Giant baobabs and big elephant herds.
Tarangire National Park is centred on the Tarangire River and is famous for its baobab trees, some of them centuries old, and for large elephant herds that gather along the river in the dry season.
Besides elephants you can see giraffes, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, impala and the occasional lion or leopard. Birdlife is varied, with raptors, hornbills and many species of weaver and bee-eater.
Tarangire is easy to reach from Arusha, which makes it ideal for a first or last stop on a safari, or as a stand-alone short trip.
Peak season: Jun to Oct
The dry season from June to October is the best time for game viewing, as animals concentrate near the river. Elephants can be seen year-round.
During the wet months, from November to May, the park is green and beautiful, birds are plentiful and visitors are fewer, though animals are more dispersed.
